Celebrate African-American Music Month with the Charles H. Wright Museum! African-American Music Appreciation Month is an annual celebration of African-American music in the United States. It was initiated as Black Music Month by President Jimmy Carter who, on June 7, 1979, decreed that June would be the month of black music. Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History presents- Sounds of Freedom: The Art & Music. Recorded live from the Griot Music Lounge in Detroit, club co-owner, storyteller, and jazz lover Jonathan Taylor is spinning two hours of classic Charlie Parker tunes while reflecting on the freedom bebop brought to jazz and the impact “Bird” had on all who came after.
